IN LISA RAY's KITCHEN with Nisha JamVwal

 KITCHEN IDEAS
WITH
NISHA JAMVWAL
THROUGH LISA RAY'S KITCHEN

Kitchens have always been an interesting challenge for me in terms of design.

Take Lisa Ray’s kitchen for example - it is just about seven feet by eight feet and would you believe that we managed to accommodate, in that space, a fridge, a wall hung pull-out dining space cum mixing platform, a cooking range, an array of overhead cupboards for everything from crockery onwards, a book shelf, a unique hand cut mug rack and other bric-a-brac...............

& yes she made some fantastic Quiche & Calazone in that space as our celebration for a fantastic experience of Kitchen Design!

In harmony with the bold bright theme running through the rest of the apartment, we painted the kitchen in bold colors.

Greens, reds, yellows and blues - wall cabinets et al.
Given that it was all to be within a very restricted budget, there had to be a lot of innovation.

Firstly, the drab cabinet doors with (once upon a time shiny) laminate, were turned inside out - the drab laminate face was now put on the inside of the cupboard so that we had a new shutter surface to work with.

On this we put a tasteful Italian veneer called “Birds-eye maple” and had it polished in a sparkling blue

A  wall-mounted table that folded into the wall to save space, was constructed and installed (positioned on a single column).

This could be folded onto the wall when not in use.

The fridge was placed in a corner at the far end and the cook range placed adjacent to the sink in the shape of an 'L', to facilitate cooking and washing seamlessly

The design solutions in this project show that it is possible to create, in what would be called an extreme shortage of space, a combination of convenient working arrangements with a good looking design.
